Recently I have been implemented a Danish version of Dynamics Navision 2009 SP1 on an English SBS server and there I meet an old “friend”.

The old “friend” was a problem with the Danish letter Ø. The letter was displayed as Ȼ which is not the right sign (actually the data was also corrupt ). At first side everything looked fine in the regional settings and the language was set to Danish – but then I looked on the Advance page and voilá there we had the answer. Code Page 850 was not selected.

After a selection of the code page and a reboot of the server, the letter Ø was now displayed correctly. Yeah!

This did though not solve all my problems. Unfortunately the data was been corrupted, due to the wrong code page. Luckily this was a new installation of Navision, so all I had to do was restore my locally build database again.

This was a new installation of Navision and not an Upgrade. If this had not been the case, it would have been necessary to correct the data “manually”. DOH! Not an ideal situation.

This time I was Lucky – next time I might not be so lucky. So in the future, I will personally check the regional settings before restoring the database.

So – always remember to check the regional settings, before you are restoring a localized Navision Database. You might else run into the same problems as I did.

Hi!
Last week I did attend the Mibuso Conference in Mechelen, Belgium.

This was a very interesting Conference! On the Agenda was:
•	Next Generation Unified Communications Platform
•	Dynamics NAV
•	Delivering Software to a Global Audience.

Next Generation Unified Communications Platform was mainly about Unified Communications. We saw a demonstration of Microsofts Office Communcations – not much new to me, because we are already using it at my work

Dynamics NAV was very interesting – here I heard a lot about the future Releases of Dynamics NAV. The Next version of Dynamics NAV that will be release is Dynamcis NAV 2009 SP1. This is not just a service pack – but is in fact a whole new release with improved functionality. Just to mention some key words – improved performance, user defined views, page search, page designer wizard, report paging (equal less memory usages / load on the server) and much more to come…. I can’t wait till it will be released

Delivering Software to a Global Audience was also were interesting. I was mainly about localization – which means, it is not “just” to translate a piece of software – but you must also remember to consider the difference cultures. Take for example in the western countries it will be Ok – to have a picture of woman on the front page – in other country it might not be. Also think about the letter size. Different countries are using different letters / alphabets – so Text constants might not be equal sized. Also in some countries the read from right to left, others countries it’s from left to right and again others, it’s from top to button – so you can see there is a lot to consider.

All in all it was an excellent conference. Well worth the Trip from Denmark to Belgium. I will defiantly be a participant next year again

One of the major changes is that now Dynamics NAV 2009 is a three-tier solution.

It comes with 2 clients – Dynamics NAV Classic, which is equal to the “old” clients, and the new Role Tailored client.

As a developer, you will mainly be using the Classic client, because all changes have to be done in the classic client.

So what’s new in the Classic client?

In the Object Designer you will now find Page. A Page is equal to a form seen from a users point of view – except, that Pages is used by the Role Tailored client, where as a form is used by the Classic client. A Page object is basically an XLM object that determines the layout of the page content.

If we take a look on the C/AL Editor, you will see that colors now are used. Yeah! Finally its starts to look like a real editor Unfortunately that seems to be all No more features have been added – I wonder when they will be adding the ReFactory possibility or go to definition – it would be nice to have these possibilities.

The debugger is the same as in the earlier versions, so no changes have been done here.

So – what about new commands?

No changes to the Table, the Form and Data port Designer.

Report has now 2 new functions SAVEASPDF and SAVEASEXCEL – which now gives us the possible to save the out come of a Report to xls and pdf . Furthermore if you have Visual Studio Report Designer installed, you will be able to redesign the Reports. This gives you the possibility to add charts, graphs, tables etc.

To XML Port has been added the possibility to call RUN from a code unit. Furthermore has the functions SETRESPONSE and GETRESPONSE been removed, and the Properties FILENAME and IMPORTFILE has been added.

When creating a new Menu in the Menu Suite, you must now choose what it is design for – Classic Client or Role Tailored Client. But so far it is the only changes I can see that is made here.

…and then of course all the new functions belonging to PAGE object.

Furthermore a Form Transformation Tool has been aded, which can be used to “convert” existing forms to pages.

Dynamics NAV 2009 now supports Web Services, which means that you will be able to expose pages and code units as Web services.

This was what I have found until now There is properly more to discover – so the Dynamics NAV 2009 adventure will continue….
